Driving through parts of Mauritius, the landscape is marked by the sugarcane fields that seem to run on forever along the roadside. And while beautiful and peaceful in their own way, it’s an industry that has contributed to the destruction of many endemic trees on the island. This sideboard draws its design inspiration from this complicated industry with roots going back hundreds of years on the island. Black metal surrounds the furniture with a raw industrial look much like the old sugarcane mills still operating in the country. The legs and the handles of the piece are made of solid bronze hand casted from real sugarcane. The doors and drawer fronts are also made with real sugarcane thatch, creating a striking front to the furniture that brings in natural touches to any environment. The inside cabinet and drawers are lined with genuine Italian bronze leather, while the gold mirror in the back gives a feeling of transparency and lightness when its doors are opened.
